Not present

It's over, and I'm still in it

Life has moved on. New work, new relationships, new ordinary days. And then something — a song, a street, a smell — pulls the whole of you back.

It isn't that you think about it daily. It's that it never actually left.

People around you might say: that was so long ago. You've said it to yourself many times. It doesn't help.

What may be going on

"It's over" is a fact about time, not necessarily a fact inside the body. Some experiences that weren't properly passed through stay where they are, waiting.

Lingering isn't necessarily a refusal to go forward. Sometimes part of you is still back there — a feeling of being understood, a relationship that was reasonably whole, something you never got to finish saying.

So rushing to let go usually doesn't work. Letting it be remembered without being reproached each time actually leaves more room.

One small thing you can do now

When the image comes back, don't rush to chase it away.

Notice where the body reacts — throat, chest, belly. Put a hand there.

You don't have to process the memory. Just let the body be accompanied while it's being remembered.

Unsticking

When something feels stuck
