Grippingsecurityfear of lossholding backlearning to release

☀ Upright — the core message

You're holding what you have very tightly — money, a relationship, a familiar way of living. Do you know why? Because you're afraid that letting go means losing everything. But a closed hand can't hold water and can't receive anything new. What exactly are you afraid of? Say it out loud and it gets smaller.

☽ Reversed — a reminder

If you're starting to notice how tightly you hold, that's a good beginning. Letting go isn't throwing away — you can start by loosening one finger. It doesn't have to happen all at once.

In depth

🔮 Tarot symbolism

In the Four of Pentacles a figure sits with a coin balanced on his head, one clutched to his chest, and one under each foot. His posture is closed — every limb protecting what he has. The city is behind him and he has his back to it: cut off from the world in order to keep hold. The subtlest message: you think you're protecting your things, and your things are controlling you. When all your energy goes into not losing, there's none left for gaining.

🧠 Jungian archetype

The energy of the Four is stability and structure, and in earth it appears as over-attachment to material security. Four builds a fortress, and a fortress is also a cell. Deep in the psyche, the Four of Pentacles reflects a core fear: "if I lose what I have, am I still me?" That question points straight at the relationship between identity and outward circumstance. Earth's four invites you to discover that your security can rest somewhere deeper than matter.

🌸 Flower essence spectrum

Mimulus people have concrete, nameable fears — of poverty, illness, unemployment, abandonment. Unlike Aspen's diffuse anxiety, Mimulus fear has a clear object. This flower's strength helps you face that specific fear — not to remove it, but to build a new relationship with it, so you can act while afraid.

Working with this card

1

Recognise — you may be…

You may be gripping in some area — material, relational, habitual — because you fear a specific loss. Notice whether your body is tightening too: a clenched jaw, closed fists, shallow breath. Fear lives in the body.

2

Allow

“I allow my fingers to open, and security to grow from inside”

3

Body awareness — notice…

Hold a small object you like in your palm. Turn your hand over slowly and let it drop. Watch it land safely. It didn't break, and neither did you.

🫁 In the moment: a breath practice

Breathing in, clench your fist, imagining you're gripping what you fear losing; breathing out, open your palm and imagine it still resting there, no longer squeezed. Six times.

🌸 Scent guidance

Patchouli with sweet orange — the patchouli brings an earthlike security so you don't need to grip in order to feel steady, the orange a light trust.

Today's practice

Make one deliberate small gift today — give away something you like but don't need, leave a larger tip, give your time to someone who needs it. Notice afterwards whether your heart feels emptier or fuller.

🧘 How this awareness works | MUNI × Joy of Living

The hand holding something is also held by it — try clenching a fist for a long time and you'll find that it isn't you controlling the fist but the fist controlling you, because your hand is too tired to open. You think releasing means losing something; in fact what you gain is the freedom of your hand. And with a free hand you can do far more than the thing you were holding was worth.
