Larch

Despondency and despairLow confidence, expecting to fail

Step 1 · State (recognise)

Before you have even begun, you already doubt whether you can do it.

Step 2 · Allow (the core)

I allow myself to try, without ruling myself out first.

Step 3 · Back to the body

Notice your spine or the feeling of standing. The body is touching, the body is breathing.

If you'd like the body to hold this state more easily, this is a good place to start.

In depth

【Emotional signature】

Larch shows up when self-assessment runs low and comparison comes easily. When an opportunity arrives, you see your shortfall first, so you step back and avoid the failure or awkwardness that trying might bring. This isn't an absence of ability. It's what happens when attention has rested for a long time on "I'm not good enough", and action becomes hard.

【Through the lens of neuroception】

What this card reflects: the body treats "don't get it wrong" as its safety strategy, so it puts on the brake before acting. In this state, the body may show: * The spine drawing in slightly; standing that isn't quite steady * An instinctive step backwards when opportunity appears * The quick inner voice: "I probably can't" This is not a problem. The body is trying to protect you from being hurt — it just closes the door on experience at the same time.

【How this essence supports you】

The support of Larch is in helping you stand back in your own place. It doesn't ask you to be confident now, and it doesn't push you to prove anything. It lets the body slowly feel that trying, in itself, is allowed. When comparison and dismissal step back, a sense of your own presence surfaces on its own.

【Today's practice】

When you're facing something you'd like to try, pause first. Let your attention rest lightly on your spine or on the feeling of standing. There's no need to change your breathing — just know that the body is breathing. Let "I am here" be felt before anything else.

【Working with MUNI Scent】

Press a small amount of MUNI Scent into your palm, or open the bottle near your nose and take three easy breaths of it. Then rest a hand on your back or near your spine, and let scent and touch keep you company, without expecting anything to change. Smell is the only sense that skips rational analysis and reaches the centres of emotion and memory directly — let the scent be a support that helps the body stand, instead of being pushed towards comparison.

How to work with this

Body awareness here is not about hunting for what hurts, and not about making the body become something. It's about choosing a part of the body that is relatively easy to feel, so attention has somewhere to rest. This is not for the sake of building confidence, nor to tell yourself "I can do it". It is simply keeping company with the experience that is happening. No intervening, no correcting — letting awareness unfold on its own, once it's allowed to.

For practitioners

If you are using this card with a practitioner: * Keep your voice respectful and neutral; avoid comparison or "you can definitely do it" * Watch for a stronger sense of standing, the spine lengthening, the breath returning to the body * You might say: "You don't have to believe it yet. Just stand here." When you use MUNI Scent together: In a shared scent environment, the body finds it easier to set down self-comparison, so presence doesn't rest on performance — it simply holds.
